This week, Brian and Zach take a look at the defensive side of the ball and break down each of the position groups. The biggest surprise from this episode? Brian and Zach have a somewhat spirited discussion about future All-American A.J. Epenesa and what his expected impact should be in 2018. While both expect there will be some ups and downs this year, there is agreement that this defense has talent and could provide some excitement this season.

The Hawkeye 4DT podcast returns with a vengeance for another season of Hawkeye football! After serving our self-imposed offseason suspensions for violation of podcasting rules (i.e., overpromising and under-delivering), Brian and Zach have returned with their first podcast of the season breaking down the offensive side of the ball and clearing out many of the grab bag topics that have piled up over the offseason. Tune in to hear which offensive unit is in the best shape for 2018, which unit gives us the most cause for concern, and who we expect to be the breakout offensive stars this season.

As the train pulls into the station on the 2017 season, Zach and Brian return with the final regular season episode of the Hawkeye Four Down Territory podcast.  Not surprisingly, there wasn’t a ton of positivity flowing from the guys in this week’s podcast.  Rather, Zach and Brian spent a large portion of the podcast breaking down the disappointing loss to Purdue and analyzing the current state of the Iowa football program.  With one game to go in the regular season, there are several things that the guys will be watching this week to see if the Hawks have learned from the last two losses.  On the positive side, the Iowa basketball team (finally) delivered a win today, so the terrible week for Iowa sports fans is now hopefully headed in another direction.  Time for the football team to go win the Heroes Trophy and end the week on a high-note!

Did you hear that thud? Yes, that was the Iowa Hawkeye offense falling back to Earth. The rollercoaster that is the 2017 Hawkeye Football season continued with an all-time disappointing offensive performance, as Iowa fell to the Wisconsin Badgers 38-14. Brian and Zach look at where they think things went wrong against the No. 5 team in the country after things went so right against the OSU Buckeyes. If anything, this year has taught us that you can’t live in the past. Luckily, Josh Jackson wasn’t living in the past and resting off of his three-interception performance against OSU, as he provided the lone bright spot, contributing not one, but TWO, pick-sixes this week. The guys finally look ahead at what is coming up against Purdue and Nebraska and try to project the rest of the season – but, hey, who really has been able to predict anything about the 2017 season?

Was it a dream?  Nope.  We double (and triple) checked - the Hawkeyes still beat the Buckeyes 55-24. Wow. Still riding high on Saturday’s beatdown, Zach and Brian return with TONS of positivity in this week’s episode of the Hawkeye 4DT podcast. In fact, Zach held Brian to his word and in honor of the amazing victory, the negativity of the third down topics was skipped altogether! In addition to basking in the glow of Saturday’s game, the guys discuss what they are looking for from the Hawkeyes in this week’s tilt for the Heartland Trophy against the Badgers, which really boils down to one word - ATTACK!!

Unbelievable would be an understatement! We all knew about the last second FGs to beat Michigan in 2016 and PSU in 2008, and we figured that, if Iowa was going to have a chance to win this game, it would probably take a similar effort. We could not have been more wrong about that. Iowa dominated this game from the first offensive snap for OSU. Well, maybe not from the first play, but after the game was tied up 17-17 (and Brian texted Zach that OSU would be able to score on Iowa at will), Iowa took control of the game and never looked back thanks to aggressive (and uncharacteristically consistent) offensive play and ball-hawking defense. Zach did this show solo and he cannot wait to break this one down with Brian early this coming week!

Nov 1, 2017

With OSU coming up, Brian and Zach spend more time focusing in on the next opponent, perhaps more so than any podcast since...Michigan 2016. Are we heading for a repeat? Maybe not, but we can dream. The guys look at the improved downfield passing game and the impressive year of potential First Round NFL draft pick Josh Jackson, before commiserating over the consistently inconsistent offense. Lastly, but maybe most importantly for this week, the important question comes up - no, not "trick-or-treat," but rather "bend or break" in reference to the role of the defense this week against the dynamic OSU offense.

Brian and Zach provide their RAW reaction to Iowa's 17-10 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Oct 26, 2017

After another disappointing loss, Brian and Zach, surprisingly, had quite a bit to say. This week's episode is more therapist's couch than podcast as Brian admits to working his way through the five steps of grief following the 17-10 loss to Northwestern. Not to be left out, Zach, who started out proclaiming he was just shaking his head all week, ended up getting pretty fired up discussing the shortcomings of our 2017 Hawkeyes.

Fresh off a bye week and revved up for the second-half of the Hawkeyes’ season, Zach and Brian return with this week’s 4DT breakdown heading into the Northwestern game.  In this episode the guys dive deeply into the Hawks’ offensive line play, passing game, problems with consistency, defensive performance, and field position woes, among other things.  Perhaps not surprisingly, Zach and Brian once again have widely different views about the 2017 defense and whether it should be an area of concern as we head into the back half of the schedule.  The guys wrap up this episode with their predictions for this week’s important tilt with the Wildcats.

Bye week could not have come at a better time?!? Regardless of whether this is the perfect time for bye week, we find ourselves in the midst of it once again. This week, Brian and Zach focus on a few headlines, mostly provided by the offensive and defensive coordinator press conferences, before jumping into mid-season awards. There was certainly some movement from our pre-season awards, but also some awards that went to exactly who we thought they would be. Join us as we kill the clock waiting out bye week – we will be back to you next week with a Four Down Territory Breakdown heading into a road tilt at Northwestern.

Zach and Brian provide their RAW reaction to Iowa's dominant win (well, dominant second half . . . okay, fine! dominant fourth quarter . . .) over the Illinois Fighting Illini. There were a lot of things to like: Brandon Snyder's return (both to the field and the pick 6!), the defense again gives up a lot of yards but not a lot of points, and the offense seems to get on track, at least for one game. And for you Iowa State fans, we even said some nice things about the Cyclones' big win over Oklahoma.

Another week, another disappointing loss for the Hawkeyes, though, in a lot of ways, this one may be harder to stomach. Brian and Zach spend quite a bit of time analyzing how the Hawks can get back on track this week and in the weeks to come.  The running game and the lack of execution on the offensive side of the ball get lots of attention in this episode. Even though the game didn’t go as expected, there were still a few positives to talk about, including another good team defensive effort and the Children’s Hospital wave that is catching on and is one of the bigger stories in college football this season.

Even with a few days to calm down, still tough to look back at the Penn State and not wonder what might have been. Luckily, Brian and Zach are not the ones that play the game as hopefully the team was able to put that disappointment behind them to focus on the trip up to East Lansing to take on Sparty. This week's Four Down Territory Breakdown focuses on the amazing atmosphere at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday night, whether Nate Stanley has the "clutch" gene, how good is Akrum Wadley (particularly at yards after catch - spoiler alert, very good), and what this weekend's game might mean for the rest of the season.

Brian and Zach react to Iowa's 21-19 loss under the lights to Penn State. What a great game, unfortunately, not the outcome we wanted.

Sep 21, 2017

The Hawks are undefeated heading into B1G, which is something that we can't say every year! Since Brian wasn't able to join Zach for the RAW reaction, we start this episode with a quick recap of the "disappointing" win over North Texas. This week's 4DT breakdown includes a discussion of Iowa's ability to win in different ways, concerns along the line of scrimmage, and Brian professing his love for a new Iowa RB (we hope Akrum Wadley doesn't get too jealous).

Today's RAW reaction is a bit different as Zach flies solo to give his RAW reaction to Iowa's 31-14 win over the North Texas Mean Green. It wasn't necessarily the "get healthy" win that we were hoping for, particularly with injuries to Wadley, Butler and other key players and the fact that Iowa was down to UNT at the half; but, Iowa ultimately persevered in the second half and turned in a relatively easy win. Zach does his own persevering this week for this RAW reaction, but will be joined by Brian early next week to further analyze this game and preview the Penn State game next week under the lights at Kinnick.

A few days later and the 44-41 OT win in Ames over the Iowa State remains as exciting as it was on Saturday. Brian and Zach breakdown the new (and arguably) improved passing offense and look at where things went wrong with the passing defense that played so well against Wyoming. Though we don't know a lot about North Texas, we do know that they like to pass the ball ... a lot, which we analyze mostly with hope that the added reps will get the defense back on track before opening conference play against Penn State.

Hawks win! Gotta love the 44-41 OT thriller from Ames! Brian and Zach provide their RAW reaction live from Las Vegas!

Sep 6, 2017

Can’t start any better than 1-0! Brian and Zach look at the Wyoming game in more detail after taking a couple of days to digest the dominant defensive performance. They examine what went right this week, who really led the way on the defensive side of the ball, where they expect the offense to go after a shaky start, and what it all means for Rivalry Week (easy for you to say) as the Hawks head into the annual showdown against the Iowa State Cyclones. Also, as Brian and Zach prepare for their annual trip to Las Vegas, they each give their predictions and promise to put their money where their mouth is this week.

Hawks win 24-3! Brian and Zach offer their RAW reaction to the opening win over the Wyoming Cowboys and off their thoughts on a surprisingly dominant defensive effort and analyze the inconsistent offense led by a first time QB and offensive coordinator.

It’s time, IT’S TIME, IT’S HAWKEYE FOOTBALL TIME! After waiting all offseason, we are finally in game week number 1.  Brian and Zach wrap up their preseason discussions and go on the record with their predictions for the 2017 season.  Though both came out of spring ball a little down on the team, the lead up to the season and the emergence of some potential additional playmakers have both setting lofty expectations for the year. The guys then finish out the podcast by providing their first Four Down Territory breakdown of the season for the upcoming match-up with the Wyoming Cowboys.

As the Hawkeye football season countdown clock keeps winding down, in this episode Brian and Zach tackle the final unit of the 2017 team with their special teams preview. Careful if you are only looking for nothing but positive vibes in this podcast, as the guys discuss a few areas of concern with this year’s special teams. But don’t worry too muchBrian and Zach wrap up the podcast by turning to the power of positivity as they award the 1st Annual Hawkeye 4DT Preseason Awards, including offensive MVP, defensive newcomer of the year, and many more.

After breaking down the 2017 Hawkeye offense last week, Brian and Zach turn their focus to the defensive side of the ball in this episode of the Hawkeye Four Down Territory podcast. While replacing Desmond King and Jaleel Johnson will not be an easy task for the 2017 squad, the guys believe there is a lot to be excited about with this year's defense,  Brian and Zach dive into each unit of the Hawkeye defense, and highlight a few players of particular interest that they hope could have a huge impact on the team defense this year.

After an extended break to enjoy the summer, Brian and Zach finally return to start revving the engine for the upcoming football season, but first, the guys catch up on a few offseason highlights of what has occurred in and around the Hawkeye football program the last couple of months.  Brian and Zach then delve into a discussion of what they expect from and hope to see in each unit of the Hawks’ 2017 offense.  Spoiler alert – Iowa is not returning a lot of experience at the wide receiver position.  But, don’t despair, the guys have several ideas on how the Hawkeyes can deal with that this fall.
